As I have been cooking..again lately, I get to try using the most essential spices and herbs in the kitchenry (pantry). Though I haven’t use all of the available herbs and spices in the counter, I am to share some herbs and each of its basicality (basic use) as culinary essentials.


01 Basil

Dried Basil and Fresh Basil Leaves
  • Description: Mint Family. It has a fragrant, sweet smell and peppery taste
  • Use: Flavoring Fresh Salads, creating Sauces and dips, surprisingly, it can also complement mint flavored drinks

02 Caraway Whole

Dried Caraway Whole & Caraway Plant
  • Description: Parsley Family; Plant is of Carrot Family. Its flavor has a nutty, bittersweet sharpness with a hint of citrus and anise

03 Cumin Seeds

Dried Cumin Seeds & Cumin Plant
  • Description: Parsley Family, look very similar to caraway seeds. Has a nutty, smoky flavor that works well in combination with other spices like chilis, cinnamon, and coriander
  • Use: Essential spice for a variety of rice dishes, stews, soups, breads, pickles, barbecue sauces, and chili con carne recipes. Use conservatively as its flavor is so strong.(www.thespicehouse.com)

04 Oregano

Dried Oregano & Oregano Fresh Leaves
  • Description:Mint Family. Also called Wild Marjoram, it has an aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter taste
  • Use: Combines well with spicy food and tomato-centric recipes, commonly combined with olive oil to create flavorful oregano oil, Italian vinaigrettes, and marinades for lamb, chicken, and beef dishes

05 Rosemary

  • Use: Rosemary is used as a seasoning in a variety of dishes, such as soups, casseroles, salads, and stews. Use rosemary with chicken and other poultry, game, lamb, pork, steaks, and fish, especially oily fish. 06 Sage

07 Tarragon

08 Thyme
